JAPAN HOUSE

Summer 2019 (Second Year University Project)

For this project I wanted to create a centre that was dedicated to Japan. The largest section of the centre will be a shop which sells items created by Japanese artists such as ceramics, woodwork, metalwork, homewares, stationary, art and books. There will feature a workshop area where small groups can come practice traditional tea ceremonies and learn various crafts. Finally, there will be a Japanese sushi restaurant too. I chose this brief because I have always admired the Japanese culture and was recently inspired during our trip to London by a similar centre called ‘Japan House’. I loved the concept of the store as well as the design and thought it really highlighted the beauty and simplicity of the handcrafted products. I wanted the shop to feature both traditional and modern Japanese design, however I did not want it to be too cliché, and wanted to make sure I included my own style.
